Marcus has collaborated widely with artists, filmmakers, politicians, architects, philosophers, and economists. This text established important theoretical precedents in anthropology and drew attention to the ideas of the critical perspective in anthropology, the repatriation of anthropology, and experimentalism. He later published a retrospective collection of essays on ethnography, Ethnography Through Thick and Thin , which included a number of provocations—multisited ethnography, ethnographic complicity, and reflexivity—that would further guide anthropology into the next millennium.
