I confess that I had never seen or even heard of this book before researching this post, and I found a copy of the edition partially on line at the Thomas Fischer Library at the University of Toronto, and another, the first edition of , in the Wellcome Collection in London, and I must say I was flabbergasted by the 7 engravings included in the book, which are outstanding in their detail, especially the ones showing the muscles that move the eye.

He is said to have suddenly collapsed and die at the gates of the city, presumably as a consequence of scurvy. Johann Gottfried Zinn. Johann Gottfried Zinn — anatomist and botanist, was born on December 6, in the city of Ansbach, Germany.
He started his medical studies in his native city, becoming later a student of Dr. He left for Berlin to continue his studies but came back shortly thereafter. His written works mainly concerns the results of his investigations, as well as important works on botany. His most important work is undoubtedly Descriptio anatomica oculi humani, a fundamental work in the history of ophthalmology.
