An homage to its titular land, historical and present, Mexico is laced with Latin and urban jazz vibes, though it also displays some strong North African, Balkan, and Middle Eastern elements in instrumentation and personnel minus the Balkan , if not also its melodies and structure.
The result is a work that reaches from the sweeping epic to doleful lullabies to straightforward but reflective protest music. This seems to be a theme of this album, and much of the collection more broadly: simple rhythms repeated and tweaked as a relatively consistent, cohesive base that grounds the elaborations and curious detours that comprise the rest of the composition.
